Art History

Is a foreign language needed for careers in art history?

Hi, I am working on my ba in art history, and then onto graduate school in art history and I am wondering if a 2nd language is needed in the careers for that field or for graduate school, and if so what language?. The careers I am looking into are art history professor, museum work, or art gallery work. If someone has had experience in these fields please let me know. Thanks!

  2. to get into any respectable masters/phd program you will need to have at least one other language; at least a reading proficiency. if you are interested in a phd program, you will need at two. if you are going to specialize in european art, the best languages to have are german and french. spanish and italian are also useful but it depends if you want to work on that art. since there is a very strong tradition of art historical scholarship published in german and french, those languages would be the most useful, provided you are working on a western topic.
