Is "art instruction school" worth it? I got called back by the "art instruction school" where you do all the work at home and send it back to them. I think i want to try it, but i dont know if its worth it. I'm going to a community college next semester, but i was thinking this would be a good thing to also have since i'm going to be majoring in art anyway. Its also not that expensive and thats one of the reasons it appealed to me. Does anybody know whether its even worth the time and money either way?
Art Instruction School or Community college? ok..I was thinking of enrolling Art Instruction Schools..I like to further training in my Art stuff. But I want to know what y'all think of this school (this question for those who had experience with this school) I know this school is for doing it at home and they mail you stuff. Is it worth it? or Community college is better?
Help for the Art Instruction school? I signed up for a free art test, hoping it would tell me how much this cost, it didn't. I also couldn't find the cost anywhere on their site. I need to know the price as I usually do not have any spare money. If there are any alternatives other then a college, which I also can't afford. Is there anything else in the Oklahoma area, or near the southeast area of Oklahoma that is affordable. All I truely need to know is how to draw. Once I learn that I'm confident I can teach myself painting, etc.
Anyone attended the Art Instruction School? How much is it? And other info...? Just trying to research different art schools. I am interested in finding out how much it costs. There is no info on the website, however I do know that the "school" is accredited. Any (inside) information from someone who has gone would be great, but I am mostly curious about the price. Any other school recommendations would be great as well. So far, I have looked into AI institute (not interested) and the Academy of Art (possible, but rather pricey). Unfortunately, I cannot attend a school on campus. It is not possible for me. I have also searched yahoo answers on the Art Instruction school and 95% of the answers were in favor of the school. Do you have anything to add- positive or negative? Please, NO "I just want to earn points" answers. REAL ANSWERS, PLEASE! If you have nothing useful to add, then don't! That is considered cheating in the Community Guidelines... and I will report!
What colleges in Georgia accept credits from art instruction schools? Im going to art instruction schools and they say you can earn 51 college credits with them but its up to the the school I go to wheather or not they accept all of the credits. what school in ga accepts all the credits or at least most?
How much does it cost to attend the Art Instruction School? I attended the Art Instruction School when I was 16. It's the same school the creator of Peanuts attended for those of you who may not know. You mail in your work and receive the materials in the mail. So now I am 23 and I want to start taking the classes again now that I am an adult and I have a job. When I was 16, they charged my Mom $105 a month. A boy I know said he had to pay $200 a month. Do the prices vary? If you attended this school, how much did you pay and how old were you? I am 23 if it matters.
Is it possible to withdraw from Art Instruction Schools? Hello, I enrolled to the Art Instruction Schools, in which I have to send the drawings and everything by mail. I was wondering if it's possible to cancel my subscription or whatever and stop paying for it?
Is certification from Art Instruction Schools respectable? I have seen their commercials for years and I was toying with the idea of taking their courses. I was wondering if anyone knew whether they are a respectable place or one that would be the brunt of jokes as many online schools such as Devry and University of Phoenix are. I know its not an online institution, but a correspondence course. Would people take it seriously or laugh at it because it isn't a "real" school?
Art Instruction Schools in Minnianapolis Minnesota? I am in a 2 year art college and I have assignments and books and teachers but i dont actually go to the school...i talk to my teachers on the fone and do assignments through the mail. I havent worked on it for about 2 months now and im not sure how to remotivate myself...please help.
art instruction school? i was wondering if its legit because i've been looking on the internet, reading that people have taken the test several times and keep getting 89 is it just a scam or do they have a quota that they stop giving the scholarships? i took the test just recently and i also recieved 89 so is this just a coincidence ? and do they want you to draw the exact image?
Art Instruction school question(about cartooning).. well, if ur gonna reply 2 this then i guess u know about this so they talk about cartooning and i want to ask... since its cartooning, if you ask to be thought about drawing in manga format will that be possible or what cuz i dont want to apply to draw in the american format.
Who else is enrolled in the Art Instruction Schools? I just enrolled today, do you like the course?, or was it a bad idea?
Are art instruction schools any good? As a 16 year old I am already good at art, but the problem is I can draw what I can SEE most of the time and I want to draw from my mind more. Ive read online about mixed debates of the art instruction school being a rip-off or a sham, I want someone to tell me that their art has improved since joining the school or people who were already great artists becoming even better or if their art just reached their Plateau and the school didn't improve them? Basically what I'm asking is this school only useful if you already start out as a crap artist or could it be for someone like me? if the school is really a sham, let me know of another good art college. I want to be prepared for when I graduate high school.
Art Instruction Schools? Okay there is the art instruction schools in minnieopolis( can't spell, canadian here) and i want to know who else has done it and whether it is worth the amount they ask. plus can you tell me the entire total you ended up paying and also do they ask for your money first? serious answers please, thanks
Is Art Instruction Schools scam? During the summer I called up to Art Instruction Schools' 1-800 number that they show on that camercial on TV sometimes, and I recieved the test. I sent the test and a month later I get the test back with a score: 98. The letter attached said that a representative will call and will interview me sometime in the future. About three months after that a guy named Donald Hall called and said that he will be come and interview me in a few days. Two days later he comes, I have some of my precious artwork ready for him to see on the table. I was warned over the phone that if he wouldn't like it, (he's trained) he'd just leave almost as soon as he came. but the guy liked it and stayed. Mr. Hall showed me an ID which 'prooves' he's a NYDOE Agent that represents Art Instruction Schools (which is all the way in Minneapolis). Anyway he made me an offer to take the program and do work at home and send it to them and i took it. Next day, some students and teachers tell me it's scam... Well is it really scam? Cause I don't know anymore!! There ain't no page on Wiki on them, they're supposably teaching since 1914 and gave a headstart to famous and successful artists like the guy behind the Starwars design and the guy who drew Mikey-mouse, and art colleges supposably take their reccomendation and 24 credits if you finish their program successfully. I just want proof and see that I'm not waisting my time with them. I want to be some time of designer or architect.... so are they really worth it??? P.S. Do include links for me to look at if you can In case you're wondering what's my age, I'm 17.
Does anyone have a website for the artist named Michael Hartman on the Art Instruction Schools...? ...commercial? His pencil drawings are fabulous, but I can't seem to find him in any search. I'd love to see more of his work!

I did the other day after drawing one of their comics from a magazine a while ago.-(one of them ads that says "draw me!") -If you did how did you do? was it a waste of time & money? Maybe it's not the best thing to do but I've wasted my talent long enough that I gotta start somewhere..

I recieved a "$348.50 Scholarship to "Art Instruction Schools", & was certified later-is it worth it? I drew "the pirate", sent it in, won a scholarship-but it's only 10% of the full course if I wanna graduate-I got interviewed, was certified, & am in the school but I'm gonna pay $100.00 a month/the full course is $3000.00+-are u a student-is it worth it? I don't wanna pay all this & go no where-I'm having second thoughts....
Anyone ever send drawings to "Art Instruction schools" or...? did you get enrolled? if so how far did you get? did you complete all the 27 lessons? -A man called me from the place, scheduled a time, & came to my house, told me all about this, I showed him my art & he told me I didn't need an art test, & since I'm so desperate, I accepted the deal,(130.00 a month/supplies included.) I hope this works & I pass the lessons. anyways, If you got enrolled, how did you do?

What is the textbook that they use in art schools to teach students how to understand light and shade? There must be some book(s) that they use. I am not in art school yet, but I'd like to know what they use. Or do they just get hands on instruction in light and shade without the aid of some book?
Remember those grid art activities in elementary school? What are they called? The teacher gives you a grid with letters and numbers, and an instruction sheet. The instruction sheet has coordinates telling where to put certain designs and shapes and colors. For example, the sheet would have "I2" and then a box with what you are supposed to put in that coordinate. At the end, it made a picture. Where can I find them on the Internet to print out?
What is your opinion regarding Art in High School? I had a pretty disappointing experience with Art during my H.S. years. I believe that most adults are unable to draw (or draw badly) mainly because they fail to get proper drawing instruction in middle school or High School. When I attended H.S. I was really into art but felt the assignments weren't challenging, the teachers didn't teach the fundamentals and skills necessary, and we were just given random assignments. Art seemed more like a class taken by students to get an easy grade and the assignments given were structured to keep us busy as opposed to teaching. Where does the blame lie? On the teachers who aren't doing their job properly? The students who aren't interesting in learning? the state regulations which take up too much time? Did anyone have any better experience?
Help me choose a martial art from these:? In my area I can choose from: School A: Tae Kwon Do, Hanmudo and Brazillian Jiujitsu School B: Jeet Kune Do School C: Kenpo & Japanese JiuJitsu (also offers "mixed martial arts" instruction) School D: Hapkido Assuming all are equidistant, cost the same and the instructors are equally competent in their field, any input on which to go for? I know I'll get out of it what I put into it and the naswers I get are subjective - but help me choose!!

Art School Admission Essay? Okay, I really want to get into this art school and it requires me to write a admission essay. The school didn't give me any specific instructions except "explain why you wish to attend". I have no idea really how to write one either since my public school teachers didn't teach me jack. >__>; Anyways, I noticed other admission essays didn't have five paragraphs, but somtimes three or seven. So how many paragraphs should I include? Second, how should I format it exactly? After I looked up some things on the interenet I was going to do up something like this: - Introductory about me. - My art skills, activities, and etc. - Why I think this school is for me/why I wish to attend. - How I will benefit the school, how the school will benefit me & a closing sentence. It'd be four paragraphs, but they would be long.

What is a good arts and crafts idea for Sunday school students? I work at a synogouge as the Sunday School art teacher. I need 1 or a couple of art project ideas to choose from for ages: - 3 to 5 - 6 to 7 and - 8 to 11 Since it is around Purim time, activitys that incorporate the holiday would be nice. Also, if you could, please write simple instructions as how to make whatever it is you are suggesting. Thanks!
Aria or art song for soprano audition? I'm auditiioning for private instruction at my school, what is a good aria/ art song for a soprano voice (don't know my full range quite yet) something simple and works well for a beginner? thanks! not a musical theatre song...
How can you tell if a martial arts school is good quality? I am try to avoid a McDojo and get the best instruction possible but there is not any real credentials I know to go off of. I don't care if my instructor use to be a super star I just want him to be a good teacher.
I need some artistic advice-please help? I need some art advice. I went to SVA and I have a degree in animation/film. I tried getting a job in animation and it didn't work out for me. I want to get my own comics published and distributed. I want to go back to school and get a degree in Illustration/Cartooning so I can get the training I need to work as a comic artist/writer/creator. My problem is I have issues with my financial aid, and I can't get a degree online till that's taken care of. I tried taking classes in a local art school in the meantime-but they didn't have too classes related to illustration/cartooning and comic art-I did have a comic creativity course but that was it and I have some 2-D and 3-D drawing classes. It would be to my benefit if I have an Illustration/Cartooning degree since a lot of jobs look for that, and some places need animators-I tried getting jobs through the alumni dept. at my old school-but I can't get down to them anyway-I can't afford the commute. I live in upstate NY and these jobs are down in NYC and Long Island-I can't get to the freelance ones. I was told by some people you need a cartooning degree to get a cartooning/illustration job, and others said having a cartooning degree isn't necessary if you want a job in comics. My animation degree isn't enough-you have to have training to work as a comics artist/writer/illustrator. I tried finding out about the art programs at my local colleges-they don't have what I am looking for. I considered The Art Instruction Schools-they are the company that advertises the free art test which you complete and return to them so they can evaluate it. I found out their work-at-home program costs $130 for enrollment and $130/month each month after for 26 months. Right now I can't afford that. Until I get situated financially what can I do to get the training I need-where should I go? Does anyone here know anything about getting funding to get my work out there?
Aspiring artist, where do I go? I'm thirteen and since I was very young I've been able to draw realism, very realistic. I want to get somewhere with my art, so why not start now? I've won national competitions and I've been offered transfers. But I want some sort of degree, something to call me professional. I want to take a class or something. After all, I've never had an art class in my life. I've called Art Instruction Schools, but their too high. What can I do?
Looking for private martial arts instruction? Does anyone have any recommendations for private martial arts instructors in the the Leeds/Harrogate/York area? I am looking for a mix of grappling and striking. I have basic experience in Judo and Taekwondo, but each seems to me to be too specialized (Judo has too much grappling, Taekwondo has too much kicking). I'm looking for a rounded martial art - good mix of punching, kicking, grappling, self defense. Any suggestions to instructors or schools in the North Yorkshire are are welcome. Thanks.
What is the average monthly fee for martial arts instructions? Specifically martial arts schools in North and South Carolina. I'm finding one school charge only $35 and others charging well over $100 per month for the same style of martial arts. I was wondering what the average is.

What online programs can I use to learn how to make comics professionally? I was going to make plans to go back to college to get a second degree in illustration/cartooning, or register to take continuing ed classes for illustration/cartooning so I can get my own comics published, or sign up for the 2-year program with Art Instruction Schools. my mother suggested finding out what programs I can use online where they will show you how to make comics professionally. What such programs out there on the web would help me? Please let me know and please list as many as possible. Thank you.
How to become a creative art teacher/speaker/coach? I want to travel to local (or even further) to encourage creative arts with children. The arts programs in the public schools in my area are almost non-existant. Budget cuts have hit disciplines of study such as art class, PE, music (vocal and insturmental), drama, etc. My son's school (he's in 4th grade) does incorporate some fine arts into the daily curriculm, but I don't think he's getting nearly enough. For example, they are encouraged to write a play the act it out. They do some painting (water colors only) in coordination with other subjects (Science usually). Anyway, since it's not offered in the schools anymore, and parents are too busy to learn how to play, I see a strong need in my community for instruction in creative play. Some sites/authors I've studied are: www.donnasday.com www.kidconcoctions.com and of course, all of the homeschooling sites. I also see a need for coaching on creative play for early childhood caregivers and youth/children's ministry programs
Looking for studio art classes in DC area? A friend of mine is looking to take a studio art class in the DC area. She paints in oil, but that's not crucial. She wants a model to observe, wants to be with other artists. Don't think it is really about getting 'instruction' - more about a nice shared studio atmosphere. Really expensive would not be good. I suggested a) a community college with studio art classes b) an art school with studio classes c) a collective of artists who share a model and studio space. I don't have specifics on any of the above for the DC area. Any artists out there with ideas?? Thanks alot!! .
Is it good to combine iaido training with karate training? I wanna start out Iaido while combining it with karate instruction. What do you people think? Also, can you tell me of a martial arts school in Santa Monica CA or Los Angeles that teaches iaido?
Admissions for The Juilliard School for Performing Arts? I'm currently a freshman in high school, but I'm starting to look at different performing arts colleges now to be sure that I can meet the requirements. I will be pursuing violin. I have been playing for four years in school orchestras, and have been concert master all four years(when I was in middle school, we were divided up into orchestras by grade level, and grades are mixed in the orchestra I am in at my high school). http://www.juilliard.edu/admissions/generalap.html I've read over the criteria listed on Juilliard's website, and I'm still a bit unclear about the criteria... The admissions staff looks at the classes that you've taken and the grades that you received in those classes, but they don't really look at your GPA a lot when they are making decisions on who to admit, correct? Does the audition or your transcript have a larger weight on whether or not you have a chance of being admitted, or are they equally weighted? I've also got a few general questions... If you've been under the instruction of someone who graduated from Julliard, does that make your application look any better, or would that really make any difference? When you have to go for the audition, are there any restrictions on who can come with you to the audition? I don't mean like in the actual auditioning area, but like in the waiting area before the audition. Approximately how many new students are accepted to Juilliard each year(like an exact number, not a percentage)? Besides training at school and via private lessons, what other training should I be looking at finding now? Are there any other performing arts schools that are comparable in quality and style to The Juilliard School? If so, what are they? I might look at those schools as well... Thanks a bunch! :-)
Martial Arts School 1 year contract. False verbal information.? Hello, I posted yesterday about this topic, but did not post enough detail. I signed a 1 year contract at a mixed martial arts gym based on what was said during the tour of the gym and false information given to me at the front desk before I signed. The main reason I joined this school was due to 5 of their instructors. Before I signed, I asked them, " since I am signing a contract, what's stopping the instructor's from leaving? Do they have to sign a contract as well?" He said that they all had to sign 5 year contracts in order to teach at the school. He said they have to serve out their tours before leaving. 1 month later, 4 out of 5 of their top instructors are gone and their mixed martial arts coach is gone. The schedule at the gym has changed and they are currently looking for replacements. They will not be able to match the quality of instruction with replacements(fact). What steps can I take in order to resolve this? I am a 21 year old college student that works full time and has a ton of bills, I don't appreciate 150 dollars being stolen from me per month or even putting myself in a position of confronting the owner for a cancellation fee because he felt like lying to me. 150$ per month 1 year contract. Can be frozen due to illness or injury. I'm only 1 month into it.
Martial arts school contract. Owner is a Fraud.? Last May I signed a 1 year contract to an mma school based on their website and information given to me during the "tour". -The school is part of a large franchise throughout North America. -On the website it states that you can cancel at any time with a written letter and a small fee. -I was told by the owner that their instructors are locked into a 5 year contract and can't leave until they fulfill their time there. -I looked at their website and saw all of the instructors, and these instructors were verified as the instructors by the owner. -1 month later half of their most qualified instructors left because the owner was not paying them correctly. There was no 5 year contract. -The franchise owner forced the MMA school to take down all signs and change the name of the school because he no longer wanted that school in the franchise because of how bad it was run. -Now the school is under a different franchise but is the same facility. I am still being charged even though it is a different company now. On my statement, it shows a different name that is withdrawing from my account(the new name of the school). -Half of the instructors that were on the website never set one foot into the school. -I can no longer learn because the quality of instruction has gone down. -The employee's there have looked up porn and illegal drug information during the day while people were training, (some below the age of 18) -Sexual harrassment towards females, which caused their womens class to fall apart. -Racist remarks from the owner. -He did not give his members a copy of the membership contract, but I happened to find a copy from an irrate ex-employee. She sent it to me via email. -The contract has the franchise logo on it, but whenever people went to cancel their memberships, he stated that the contract was to that particular school and not the franchise. -While going to the new website, the rate of this particular franchise is 99 dollars a month with a 1 year contract compared to the 149.99 that I am paying now. -When I first signed up the class schedule had about 2 times as many classes and was open Saturday and Sunday. Now, during the week there are fewer classes and it is no longer open on the weekends. -Where do I go from here? Is there anything that I can possibly do to either cancel, or stop paying and threaten to take him to court? I have no idea. -This is the information I have. -Screenshots of the webpages with the cancellation policy -the changes in their class schedule -their instructors that never stepped foot inside of the place and were being advertised -a copy of the contract -screenshots of the new website with the different rates -as well as my bank statements that now show a different company name that is withdrawing from my debit. -Web history, showing pornography and drug research. Thank you very much for your time. Any help will be greatly appreciated.
Martial Arts Instruction I have Shorin Ryu and Kenpo training. I am time pressed. Any opinions on the Adrian Roman Distance Learning Kenpo program or suggestions for other programs? What about Shotokan? There is a less expensive school that isn't a sport karate school. I'm into self defense and forms not into sport fighting like my Kenpo school. Any other suggestions? My current school is so big that maybe I get 5 minutes a class with an instructor if I'm lucky so I'm not progressing. I figured at least video study would let me concentrate on the techniques.
Need advice on Martial Arts School? I'm in a bit of a situation right now. A new MMA school opened up in my area and covers all aspects of mma and has really good instructors. My current school is pretty decent, but it doesn't cover all aspects of mma and I need to pay extra for certain classes. I'd really like to join this new school, but I have 6 months left on my contract at my current school and is bjj only, with boxing and kickboxing being extra. I plan on training a lot this summer. My current school charges me 120 a month unlimited. Extra classes are 15 dollars each, which I try to do 2-3 times per week. So we can say thats about 160 a month? The new school that opened is offering me 150 a month unlimited, covers all aspects of MMA and is open the entire day, has a weight room, and has better bjj instruction on top of all aspects of mma. I'm really unsure on what I should do... I'm a 21 year old college student and I only make about 850$ a month at my job. any advice? need to make this choice today. 45bucks a week in extra classes = an additional 160 a week on top of the 120 is what I'm saying.
I am looking for teen dramatic acting classes in Scarborough? I have a daughter in a Performing Arts High School, grade 9 But they do not commence the instruction until next year. I would like her to take classes until then. Any ideas? Thanks
Why are so many martial arts schools SO unprofessional? In my experience they all make at least one of the following mistakes: Instructors ridicule students. They dont' act like you're a paying customer. They use foul language. They use intimidation. They beat on students. They disregard student's safety. They neglect instruction in favor of horseplay. They play loud music. They don't make kids programs FUN. They're never wrong. They don't welcome questions. What is the deal with this? How do you find one that actually respects you, your money and your desire for instruction?
Art projects for adult students? Has anyone got an websites or book recommendations on art projects for adult students? The students are adults (25+) who took only basic art classes in middle or high school with no further experience or instruction, but are interested in learning more. All mediums are welcome. NYU Tisch School of the Arts? I'm a junior in high school, and I know for a fact I would like to pursue photojournalism. I've been taking photography classes since my freshman year, and have received excellent instruction and feedback. Now that the pressure of applying to college is starting to set in, my top choice is definitely Tisch at NYU. I plan to work for a B.F.A. in Photography and Imaging, but I really need to know more about the school, i.e. how competitive the admissions process is, and really what they look for in the portfolio. I know NYU is ridiculously difficult to get accepted to, and if this doesn't work out for me, does anyone have any other suggestions for top-notch photography/art departments at colleges?

Recommendations for Grammar Composition lessons for reluctant writer? I am homeschooling my son for the first time this year. I have been using Learning Language Arts Through Literature and am supplementing with a journal. My son is 6 1/2 y and is a reluctant writer. He has ADHD and says he feels like the words and sentences are "filling up his head" and won't come out. Please no comments on the validity or existence of ADHD. Apparently some children with this disorder have difficulty with expressive speech, so does this include writing? He also has some fine motor delays, detected from tests by a licensed psychologist. He is using the red book for LLATL, but I am concerned with its lack on composition instruction. The public schooled children in my neighborhood are composing simple paragraphs in 1st and 2nd grades. Right now he dictates to me and I write his thoughts down, then he copies them onto manuscript paper. Is there a better way? He is frustrated and I am, too. Sometimes he chooses the topic and sometimes it comes from a lesson.

Home schooling, college? What are my chances with a record like this? I applied to Florida State University as my first choice, and as I get closer to finding out if I got in, I'm getting more and more nervous. Do you think I had a chance? My grades for high school were all A's. I have 4 credits of math (up to pre-cal), 4.5 of English, 5 of social science, 5 of natural science (with labs), and 2 of French. I also studied a number of electives such as home ec/life skills, music theory, health, programming and robotics, digital design, art, and sign language. FSU requires that home schoolers submit a syllabus for each course studied in high school to explain course content and list materials used, and we made these very detailed. How does one receive A.S. Degree? I currently attend a community college, and I'm taking an animation class. I wan't to get my A.S. Degree there, and then transfer...this is the program I want to follow http://www.mtsac.edu/instruction/arts/art/degree_animation.pdf Let's say I finish all the classes on the link above, who gives me the degree? does the school automatically know when I'm done? Im really confused...thanks in advance.
A friend of mine wants to go to the art institute at 17, can she do it with a GED and high sat scores? My girlfriend, like myself, hates high school. The drama, the crap, the instruction style, the lack of focus on what she is interested in learning. She's an artist, and a damn good one. She wants to get high school over with and go to college... she wants to get an early start on life. She has a very impressive portfolio, extremely high SAT scores. If she took a GED test, she would pass with flying colors, and she could easily teach her high school classes. Would her, with parental permission, the money for tuition in cash, near perfect SAT scores, and a high school equivalency test of GED, be able to attend the an Art Institute at the age of 17?
Are Oklahoma homeschool laws the best ones? We are considering moving there because they are a green hslda state and have low property taxes. Here's the law. Required Subjects: None Home School Statute: None. 1. It is unlawful for a parent of a school aged child “to neglect or refuse to cause or compel such child to attend and comply with the rules of some public, private or other school, UNLESS OTHER MEANS OF EDUCATION [i.e., home schooling] ARE PROVIDED for the full term the schools of the district are in session.” 2. Oklahoma is the ONLY state with a constitutional provision guaranteeing the right to home school. Section 4, Art. 13 of the Constitution of Oklahoma guarantees the home school exemption by stating that the legislature “shall” provide for the “compulsory attendance at some public or other school, UNLESS OTHER MEANS OF EDUCATION ARE PROVIDED of all children in the State , between the ages of eight and sixteen, for at least three months each year.” It seems quite evident that the “other means of education” language is directly applicable to home schooling since it was added for the specific purpose of protecting the right of parents to choose home schooling. In 1907, during the Oklahoma Constitutional Convention, one of the delegates, Mr. Buchanan, proposed that the phrase “unless other means of education be provided” be added to Article 13, Section 4. Favorably responding to Mr. Buchanan’s proposal, another delegate, Mr. Baker stated, “I think Mr. Buchanan has suggested a solution. A man’s own experience sometimes will teach him. I have two little fellows that are not attending a public school because it is too far for them to walk and their mother makes them study four hours a day.” As a result of this discussion on home schooling, the “other means of education” language was added to Article 13, Section 4. OK-1 Oklahoma OK-2 3. Oklahoma law does not require parents to use certified teachers or state-approved curricula, initiate contact with, register with or seek approval from state or local officials, test their students or permit public school officials to visit or inspect homes. If a parent is teaching his children the basic subjects for at least 180 days, the law requires nothing more. 4. Home schools are not regulated, since the framers of the Oklahoma Constitution specifically intended “other means of education” to include home schooling and gave the state no authority to regulate that exemption from compulsory attendance. In Snyder v. Asbery (No. 78,045, Oklahoma Court of Appeals, Div. 2, May 18, 1993), the Oklahoma Court of Appeals returned two children to the custody of their home schooling father, reversing a lower court decision. On page 4 of the decision, the Court agreed with the home schooling father, stating “...the State Department of Education has no jurisdiction in home schooling. See 70 O.S.1991 § 3-104 … Okla. Const. art. 13, § 5….” 5. In the case, Sheppard v. Oklahoma, 306 P.2d 346 (Okla. Crim. App. 1957), the court held that requirements of school attendance laws could be met even though children were not attending public or private school. The court said “education may be furnished without attendance at any school.” Sheppard, at 353. The court also emphasized “it was incumbent on the state to offer proof” that “no other means of education was provided.” Sheppard, at 356. In other words, the state failed to carry its burden of proof since it failed to prove that “other means of education” was not being provided. The court indicated further that, if the state finds other means of education are being provided, then they must prove that the means of education is not “adequate and comparable” to instruction in public schools. Id. at 356. The court also suggested the state could inquire about the curriculum in two areas: period of instruction and subjects taught. Id. 6. The Oklahoma Supreme Court in School Brd. Dist. No. 18 v. Thompson, 103 P. 578, 24 Okla. 1 (1909), upheld parental rights against the public school’s authority. “Under our form of government … the home is considered the key stone of the governmental structure. In this empire, parents rule supreme during the minority of their children … they may … withdraw them entirely from public schools and send them to private schools, or provide for them other means of education. 7. According to Attorney General Opinion No. 73-129 (Feb. 13, 1973) Oklahoma law recognizes the right of parents to carry out this responsibility through home schooling “so long as the private instruction is supplied in good faith and equivalent in fact to that afforded by the State.” “Equivalency” has never been defined by any court or Attorney General opinion, nor is equivalency mandated by law. However, it seems clear that the point of the Attorney General opinion is that home schooling must not be used as a subterfuge for truancy. See Wright vs. State, 209 P. 179 (1922). 8. Under Sec. 10-109(A), an attendance or police officer may detain and assume temporary custody of a child “except for children being home schooled pursuant to Section 10-105.” Teacher Qualifications: None. Standardized Tests: Not required by statute. Oklahoma OK-3 Religious Freedom Act: Oklahoma Statutes, Section 251 of Title 51 The Religious Freedom Restoration Act (RFRA), passed with the help of HSLDA members, gives religious home schoolers another legal means to protect their right to home school. If the parents’ free exercise of religion is substantially burdened by having to comply with the homeschool law, the parents may use the RFRA as a defense or file suit against the state. Under this statute, the burden is on the state to prove that its requirement "furthers a compelling state interest" and is the "least restrictive means" of fulfilling its interest that children be educated. This Act restores the highest protection of the individual's right to freely exercise his religious beliefs taken away by the U.S. Supreme Court in its 1997 City of Boerne decision. 520 U.S. 507.

Good credentials for teachers looking for work? I'm an education major currently, studying to be a high school teacher. I am curious about what courses I should take now or experiences I should have that would be beneficial to me later on, and also that would help me to stand out when I go in to interview (aside from the student teaching and required pedagogy instruction, which is fairly obvious in and of itself). I'm planning to teach language arts/social studies (or English and history, whichever is available). Any advice is appreciated!
Will I lose my voice? Im 14 years old. I sing Opera for a living. Im not famous, and right now I don't choose to be. But even though I have proper training, Im afraid i'll lose my voice. I attend a performing arts high school, under the instruction of what they say is one of the truly known voice experts in the world. Before I attended the school, the way I sung was so much different from what Im learning now. We have to keep our jaws and tongue relaxed, which is very hard for me to produce sound. But besides that, I wonder, in 4 more years, will i lose my voice from singing opera at such a young age?

need help? Japan? Japan Lower-Secondary School Lower-secondary school covers grades seven, eight, and nine-- children between the ages of roughly twelve and fifteen--with increased focus on academic studies. Although it is still possible to leave the formal education system after completing lowersecondary school and find employment, fewer than 4 percent did so by the late 1980s. Like elementary schools, most lower-secondary schools in the 1980s were public, but 5 percent were private. Private schools were costly, averaging ?58,592 (US$3,989) per student in 1988, about four times more than the ?30,828 (US$934) that the ministry estimated as the cost for students enrolled in public lowersecondary schools. The teaching force in lower-secondary schools is two-thirds male. Schools are headed by principals, 99 percent of whom were men in 1988. Teachers often majored in the subjects they taught, and more than 80 percent graduated from a four-year college. Classes are large, with thirty-eight students per class on average, and each class is assigned a homeroom teacher who doubles as counselor. Unlike elementary students, lower-secondary school students have different teachers for different subjects. The teacher, however, rather than the students, moves to a new room for each fifty-minute period. Instruction in lower-secondary schools tends to rely on the lecture method. Teachers also use other media, such as television and radio, and there is some laboratory work. By 1989 about 45 percent of all public lower-secondary schools had computers, including schools that used them only for administrative purposes. Classroom organization is still based on small work groups, although no longer for reasons of discipline. By lower-secondary school, students are expected to have mastered daily routines and acceptable behavior. All course contents are specified in the Course of Study for Lower-Secondary Schools. Some subjects, such as Japanese language and mathematics, are coordinated with the elementary curriculum. Others, such as foreign-language study, usually English, begin at this level. The curriculum covers Japanese language, social studies, mathematics, science, music, fine arts, health, and physical education. All students also are exposed to either industrial arts or homemaking. Moral education and special activities continue to receive attention. Students also attend mandatory club meetings during school hours, and many also participate in after-school clubs. Most lowersecondary students say they liked school, although it is the chance to meet their friends daily--not the lessons--that is particularly attractive to them. The ministry recognizes a need to improve the teaching of all foreign languages, especially English. To improve instruction in spoken English, the government invites many young native speakers of English to Japan to serve as assistants to school boards and prefectures under its Japan Exchange and Teaching Program. By 1988 participants numbered over 1,000. As part of the movement to develop an integrated curriculum and the education reform movement of the late 1980s, the entire Course of Study for Lower-Secondary Schools was revised in 1989 and took effect in the 1992-93 school year. A main aim of the reform is to equip students with the basic knowledge needed for citizenship. In some measure, this means increased emphasis on Japanese history and culture, as well as understanding Japan as a nation and its relationships with other nations of the world. The course of study also increased elective hours, recommending that electives be chosen in light of individual student differences and with an eye toward diversification. Two problems of great concern to educators and citizens began to appear at the lower-secondary level in the 1980s: bullying, which seemed rampant in the mid-1980s but had abated somewhat by the end of the decade, and the school-refusal syndrome (toko kyohi--manifested by a student's excessive absenteeism), which was on the rise. Experts disagreed over the specific causes of these phenomena, but there is general agreement that the system offers little individualized or specialized assistance, thus contributing to disaffection among those who can not conform to its demands or who are otherwise experiencing difficulties. Another problem concerns Japanese children returning from abroad. These students, particularly if they have been overseas for extended periods, often need help not only in reading and writing but also in adjusting to rigid classroom demands. Even making the adjustment does not guarantee acceptance: besides having acquired a foreign language, many of these students have also acquired foreign customs of speech, dress, and behavior that mark them as different. i needa know the differences from school in japan and school in an American middle school i can't really figure out any
Optimum fitness..i have time on my hands!? Hi there. My lifestyle involves a lot of training already. I do 2 hours intensive martial arts, 1.5hours intensive yoga/stretching and I climb a mountain (30 mins) every morning. Coming up next week I will have a lot more free time for 5 weeks. Instead of total boredom as I have to stay in the martial arts school..I plan to use my time to create a lot more tone and definition on my curvey lady body. I plan to lose a few pounds and strengthen up all over. I thought interval running would be good for fat burn. And some weights exercises for toning as well as lots of sit ups. I need ideas of how I can transform as much as possible over the next 5 weeks. I will have maybe 3 more spare hours a day just for exercise/toning. How can I best use it? How much can my body improve over this time? I'm def NOT afraid of hard work!! Any super-woman style websites or hard exercise instructions on internet? I want a slim, lean body but my curves tight and sexy. Help if you can. (25y.o, female)x

Teachers, do you use videos or songs in your instruction? As a previous substitute, I know a middle school teacher who uses YouTube videos made by Peter Weaterall. The videos he makes are generally for elementary age kids, but I thought that a lot of us could benefit from them. As an example, here's The Polygon Song that even some 8th graders liked. The geometry they were studying was much more complicated, but the teacher used this song as a introductory to the lesson. http://youtube.com/watch?v=lfP4dW3cXmc&feature=related If you look to the right, it shows other videos that he made. Do you know of anything else like this? It can be a video, song, both or a website? I'm particularly looking for other things like that for older students (in a Language Arts or Reading class) that you may know of. http://youtube.com/profile_videos?p=r&user=peterweatherall&page=1 There are others on photosynthesis, atoms, DNA, etc.

Can someone read over my article for me? Who’s Been Sitting in My Chair? Let it be known that the first desk in the third row of room two is a great desk. “The fake woodwork on the table part of the desk is so well done,” said Millie Jones, homeroom occupant of this desk, with a slight laugh. This reporter, who happens to reside in the same temporary quarters during grammar class, concurs completely. A desk is not the only thing Millie Jones and this reporter have in common. We are both thirteen years old and in the eighth grade at St. Francis Borgia Grade School. Miss Jones hopes to, one day, open “some sort of bakery or cake decorating place” with her 16-year-old sister, Hannah. She also adds that opening a boarding kennel, restricted to dogs only, might be fun. “No cats allowed!” she remarked lightly about her future kennel. “I once read this article,” Millie explained, after being asked why she was not feline friendly, “about how cats have some of the same characteristics as snakes- such as slit-shaped pupils and a similarly shaped head as snakes. I found that kind of creepy.” Though she already has many options to choose from, she said she has some other ideas for her career and that she’s “open to everything”. Millie went on to mention a possible profession in zoology or other sciences. “Astronomy is really cool and oceanography looks really fun,” Jones told excitedly. She is even considering following in the footsteps of her father, who is a teacher of environmental health at Saint Louis University. Millie has a natural flair for writing, a skill that will be beneficial to her in the future, no matter what occupation she chooses. Her love of writing emanates directly from her love of reading. The Chronicles of Narnia, by C.S. Lewis, The Sight, by David Clemente Davids, and “anything by Sharon Creech” are some of her favorite titles. While other children play soccer and volleyball, Millie Jones participates in Canine Freestyle Frisbee competitions with her two-year-old Border collie named Finn. She and Finn became interested in this sport during the summer of 2005, after realizing that Finn had an incredible talent for catching Frisbees in his mouth. Millie and her dog have since joined the Missouri Disc Dog Club and partaken in many competitions. In Canine Frisbee competitions, a human/dog duo performs a two-minute routine, set to music, with their dog, using as many as twenty Frisbees, performing as many as two hundred throws. “Frisbees used in competitions are very different from the hard, plastic Frisbees that kids play with. These Frisbees are much softer and more flexible than a regular Frisbee,” she told. Finn and Millie regularly practice such throws as ‘around the back’ and a ‘hammer’. Beside plain throws, one can perform many different ‘moves’. “A vault,” Millie clarified, “is when your dog runs up your back, jumps over your head, and catches a Frisbee.” She really enjoys working with Finn and plans to continue participating in Canine Freestyle Frisbee competitions. When asked which celebrity she would most like to meet, Millie thought, and answered with an unusual question. “Can he be dead? I don’t know if this guy is dead or not, but I’d choose Alex Stein. He is the guy that started the sport of Canine Frisbee with his dog, Ashley.” Millie’s life is very much centered around Finn and her involvement in Frisbee, but there are other animals who lay claim a key to her heart. Jones also has an annoying eight-year-old Silky Terrier named Daisy, two chickens named Buffy and Jody, who lay eggs for breakfast every morning, an incredibly old rabbit Fern, and two very mean parrots, Kiwi and Martini. “Kiwi bites me,” Millie winced. “When I was younger and I cried, he would laugh at me using the laugh he learned mimicking my brother, Rory’s laugh and adding in his own clucks and chirps. Now, it all sounds pretty funny.” Jones’s love of animals and the outdoors has driven her to make it a lifetime goal to take an around-the-world excursion. “If I had a chance, I would definitely take a trip around the world and stop at any place that looks interesting from the sky. I’d especially want to spend a lot of time at the rainforest. I would take a lot of pictures, too!” When asked what color in a coloring box she would be, she immediately asked, “First, it depends, am I a crayon or a colored pencil?” With an art-teacher-mom, the distinction between colored pencil and crayon makes a big difference. With clear instruction that she was a crayon, Millie immediately exclaimed she would be electric blue. Why electric blue? She responded that there was not much of a ‘why’ behind her answer; electric blue just seemed the color that most suited her… and just so happened to resemble the color of the sky on a perfect day for practicing Frisbee with Finn. Who’s been sitting in my chair? An animal-loving, book-reading, electric blue eighth-grader, by the name of Millie Elise Jones- that’s who! I'm in 8th grade and this is for a journalism class.
What "theme" should I choose for my 4th grade summer school class? I will be teaching a summer school class that lasts 4 weeks for 4 hours per day. The principal suggested that we choose a theme to base our instruction around. The don't give us ANY curriculum to use, so it is up to the teachers to choose what they want to teach. We have basic supplies (paper, markers, glue, etc.), but we don't have any other budget to speak of. We don't have text books or computer access in our classrooms. I want to choose a fun theme that I could base my lessons around for language arts, math, science, and art. Any ideas? I'm open to any suggestions that would be appropriate for 4th graders.

Choosing a career in humanitarian work? After searching and contemplating for a very long time, I've finally had something which might just be the beginning of a good idea. I want to encourage the improvement of education in the USA. *To help me figure this out, you must be able to start with the presumption that education (K-12, all the way up through the university establishments) in the USA needs serious improvement. Particularly the re-introduction of the arts and humanities, the encouragement of creative problem-solving. Certainly instruction of the sciences and math also need improvement, but I don't see that as my focus. A) I don't want to become a school teacher, although possibly for a few years of experience. B) If there are relevant non-profit organizations, what degree of study would get me into a higher position in that field? By "encourage" ("the improvement of the quality of education") I mean: BOOST, REVITALIZE, INSPIRE, PROMOTE, STIMULATE, RESTORE, strengthen, SWAY, ADVANCE, assist, SUSTAIN, UPHOLD, ADVOCATE, BENEFIT, SERVE... If I need to clarify (such as in "how?") include a question, and I will try to make more clarifications.
How has a parent dealt with there child having Central Auditory Processing Disorder? I have a feeling that my 8 year old son may have a type of CAPD. He exhibits alot of the symptoms and I wonder if I should go get him evaluated. The thing is, is that he is doing very well academically. But he tells me that the other teachers (art teacher, computer etc.) get frustrated with him because he may want to clarify some instructions. They always seem to sit him at the back of the class. My son would tell me that he would get nervous if he wants to ask another question. I don't want this to eventually hurt his self esteem. I find that at home I would repeat myself over again until he understands. I know that teachers do not have the patience. But again he is very smart and inquisitive so the teachers are not aware the the problem. How did you deal with this and what was the best type of school enviornment for your child?
In need of good sources of ideas for teaching media literacy / contemporary media such as pbs site: Art21? I'm beginning a course for high school students that requires instruction in media interpretation (critical thinking), technology use and visual arts fundamentals. I have used Art21 (http://www.pbs.org/art21/education/onlinelessonlibrary.html) as a resource, but find much of it excessively complex for 9th grade students. Are there other useful online resources that might include lesson plan ideas for this age level? Thank you.
