How can I appreciate modern art? Went to the Houston Art Museum. I'm no expert, but I have half a sense of art appreciation. If i don't "get it" on an artistic level, I can at least appreciate the craft, attention to detail, time and effort it takes to create a work of art. Then there was the modern art. I couldn't fathom it, nor could I appreciate the craft as it all looked so much like a rush job. How is a canvas with painted squares art? Or an acrylic cube filled with pink sand considered display worthy? I see no craft, nor any astetics. Am I missing something, or is modern art simply a statement that there is nothing left to explore?

Does anybody really understand modern art or dance? I'm a really creative and open-minded person, but I honestly feel that most people say that modern art or dance is "fantastic" when they really don't understand what's going on. I mean, how is a bunch of scribbles or someone running around the stage in their underwear (Brian Webb performance) brilliant? It seems like if my 2 year old nephew can draw like that or dance like that, then it really isn't that hard. And it seems as though the more crazy or wierd something is, the more "amazing" people say it is? Do they really "get it" or are they just saying that because they don't understand? I just feel that art and dance or anything of the sort should be backed up by talent and skill, as well as innovation. It seems to me that all these "modern" things are just people who don't actually have the skill but want the praise. I'm a trained dancer myself, and I just find it odd. I do recognize that some modern art and dance is very well done and requires skills and talent.
