What can I do to impress my gf's Chinese parents? They don't like her dating a white man even though I am learning Chinese, love Chinese cuisine and history, am a Chinese Buddhist and train in Chinese martial arts. Also since they live in my country I find their attitude racist.....perhaps they should have stayed if they wanted their children to marry Chinese!

What is the fascination with Chinese Art? Personally, I just don't get it. I saw some paintings by Zhang Xiaogang that have gone for several million dollars and, honestly, i think they kind of suck. What do people see in this junk? I'd rather have dogs playing poker in my wall. Am I just too stupid to see how these are the greatest paintings in the history of humanity? They must be since they've broken records for sales. http://images.google.com/images?q=Zhang+Xiaogang&ndsp=18&um=1&hl=en&start=0&sa=N louis, i'm not chinese, however most of the people that are paying millions of dollars for these paintings are westerners, so apparently they see something that i don't.

chinese feng shui - the more chi, the better? so i learned some time in an art history class.. it was chinese architecture. we were looking at slides of a chinese temple up in the mountain. the temple was situated where it could receive the most benefit from the wind according to elevation and geography. so it was said, the more chi (wind) the better. i understood this for the more obvious reason: the more a location is oxygenated, the better. though, i wonder if this it is necessarily true in feng shui that the windier, the better. where i live right now is very windy, mostly year-long, though not cool the entire year. it's quite inland, so it gets very hot in the summer.
My GPA dropped from 3.8 to 2.3, will this effect my chances of getting into college? I am a freshman at an International Baccalaureate high school, and I am a good student. I have always done well in school and my GPA was between 3.6 and 3.9. However, this third quarter I slacked off big-time, bringing down my GPA from 3.8 to a 2.3. I have an A in Biology, B's in Chinese, Art History, Health and Phys. Ed. and D's in World History and English. These poor grades are simply because I didn't want to do my homework. Though, this last quarter I am going to bring up all my grades as much as I can so I can finish Freshman year off well. My dream is to get a scholarship to a four-year University, transfer to Medical School, then intern and go to dermatologist school so I can become a Dermatologist. I want to know if this one quarter of poor grades will effect my chances of getting into college. Please let me know what you think/know. Yours, Josh.
What should I do for my Asian History Month art project? There's an Asian Heritage Month art contest at my school. The weird thing is they're making everyone enter(kind of weird for a contest, IMHO) Anyways, the theme is East Meets West and you have to make a title page. You can't make it on the computer(or else I'd do a really good photo manip...oh well), and I'm running a little low on ideas. If I do focus on one culture, I'll probably do Japanese, Chinese, or Korean. Anyways, does anyone have any ideas/ways I could get ideas?

Is there a relationship with kalaripayattu, indian martial arts, shaolin kung fu, and bodhidharma? Some of websites (such as kalaripayattu websites) claim that bodhidharma learned kalaripayattu or some form of martial art from india and then went to china? However, all of the history books that I've read state that Bodhidharma is more legend than fact.... most state the legend that he taught meditative exercises and not actual martial arts.... all the history books seem to state that his association with martial arts is legend... my history professor in Chinese history also states this and further states that most historians believe that his association with Chan/ Zen buddhism is legendalso. However, there are books written by kung fu masters that seem to disagree with them? What's up with that?

Is Tai Chi a possible next level of Kung-fu.? I have recently begin studies in Northern praying mantis school (YEA!) and every now and then I like to talk with instructors or senior students about Chinese martial arts stuff (History, martial arts history or chinese/japanese martial arts beefs lol) and while on the subject of an anime reference of Neji he mentioned Tai chi as a new level. He said After you have mastered Kung-fu or "Hard-work" which trains you to utilize your physical energy to its best you can choose to push further into Tai-chi which is a form of spiritual (chi but not as in blasts) inner body type thing that in time can reap healthy as well as very interesting benefits. I'd like some comments on this is all.

Taking APs? Hi, I have currently 3 APs accumulated....I'm aiming for the target 8 for National AP Scholar...I need 5 more, which I predict are English Literature, Chinese Language, European History, Art History and either Statistics or some type of Physics. The problem here is that for European History, Art History and my mystery 5th subject, i will need to study extra on my own. In paticular, I'm wondering how much content you need to know for Art History...is the exam very factually based? It is art so I'm not sure if there's any opinions weaved into there. Also, for Statistics, is there a lot of complicated content? I know that's a very vague question but any experiences are welcome. I took AP BC Calculus this past year and I got a 5...so do you think Statistics will be very hard to pick up on my own?--I have no room to take AP Statistics in school Any other experiences with the exams I'm aiming for are welcome!! A question...you said you learned out of Palmer...can you get all the information you need from Palmer? Cause that is our required textbook for our IB History class

ARE YOU A CHINA HISTORY SCHOLAR - Prove It? Anyone may try to answer this question. But, I put it here for people at Level 6 and 7 from Yahoo! Answers, Arts & Humanities > History. The question reads: "In what year was China's the last Han-Chinese Emperor installed?" This is not an easy or textbook question, you can't find the answer that easily and some of the best have failed! This is not a textbook question and the answer can not be found by a quick examination or reading of Encyclopedia Wikipedia, Encyclopedia Britannica, and other sources. This question is open to everyone. To answer this question correctly and you would need to be proficient in the study of China's history and you need to read classical Chinese. Are there any China history scholars out there? Prove it! The question looks simple enough. This is a good history question! . Dumb me, I gave away the answer. The question was supposed to read: "In what year was China's the last Emperor installed?" 1. Traditional Chinese do not accept the Ch'ing Dynasty as a Chinese dynasty and so the Ch'ing Dynasty is discounted. 2. If you said that Sizong or Chongzhen was the last Chinese Emperor and that he was installed was 1627 or 1628 that would be acceptable, but you are not taking into account Ming Dynasty records that show that in 1644 CHOU Shun Cheong was installed by court. Making him the last emperor to be installed. 3. By Chinese tradition all emperors are referred to by their reign title and their personal names are never used. Zhuang Leili, his posthumous name, would be more properly Zhuang liemin. 4. An Imperial succession is a continuous paternal succession and when a dynasty ends, the Imperial claimant/Imperial family is supposed to name a last Emperor and heir-apparent to the family succession for future generations. 5. CHOU Shun Cheong is the last Emperor installed by the Ming Dynasty Court. The year was 1644. SOURCE: Ming Dynasty records. . Shun Cheong's succession information does not appear in Court records as this information was privately held to protect the Emperor and his family from possible assassination by people from the foreign, Manchurian, Ch'ing Dynasty. So, apart from history writings and a few words mentioned in certain Chinese texts not connected with the dynasty's records. You will have to go to my published succession records for Emperor Shun Cheong at http://www.geocities.com/zhouclan/ImperialSuccession/1644-2007.html it gives the date written in Chinese language of China's last Han-Chinese emperor and it's not Chongzhen. ******************** Would anyone care to post the correct answer for 10 points? ******************** I think that this is a really good question and I am guessing (who knows I am probably wrong) that no one knows or will post the correct answer. PROVE ME WRONG! .

I want to know the meaning of sentence, pls? My last class is at 2:00. Does it mean starting at 2:00 or ending at 2:00? It comes from a letter: Dear Jane, It's Tuesday, November 11. I'm really busy! At 8:00 I have math. I don't like math. Then at 9:00 I have science. It's difficult, but interesting. Next, at 10:00, I have art. It's boring, but at 11:00 I have P.E. That's my favorite subject! I eat lunch at 12:00. After lunch, I have music. Music is relaxing. I like my music teacher, Mr Cooper. He's fun. My last class is at 2:00. After class I have volleyball for two hours. Why do some people still think China is a Communist nation? I am a Chinese that live in Beijing and I just don't understand... In fact, visit China today and you find the most dynamic capitalist nation in the world. In 2005, it had the distinction of being the world’s fastest-growing major economy. China is the manufacturing hub of the globe. It’s is also moving quickly into the highest of high technologies. It already graduates more computer engineers every year than the United States. Its cities are booming. There are more building cranes in use today in China than in all of the United States. China’s super-highways are filled with modern cars. Its deep-water ports and airports are world class. Its research and development centers are state of the art. At the rate its growing, in three decades China will be the largest economy in the world. Communist, as in economy? Are you kidding? It is ture that the communist party is the only party there is. But in day to day live communism is history.We a capitalist economy with out democracy. I understand that China did lots of bad things in the past like the 1989 Tiananmen Square incident and the Great Leap Forward. BUT... if you look closely, China is not the only nation that did atrocities in her history. The US for one had the Kent State shootings in the 1970s' and students was killed. Base on the current US administration today, it would be pretty hypocritical of US to accuse China.When that huge tsutnami hit Asia, China responded IMMEDIATELY by sending provisions and stuff. They were there immediately to help out the worst hit countries and the tsutnami didn't even effect China's mainland at all. How long did it take for the US to respond to the tsunami? To Katrina? Very long, and Katrina was on American soil! America also did tons of bad things: Korean war, Vietnam war, Colonialism, slavery, Gulf War, etc. There are more brain wash in the Schools of US then the ones in China. Kids are writing artcles about 'Why is America the best nation of the world', 'Report on human rights violation in China' for their home work! Yet for some unknow reson, they are not brain wash. On the other hand, schools in China are teaching the kids not to litter, not to spit and to understand the motherm land's history. But people are calling it 'mind control' and 'brain wash'. Interesting.... Why doesn't China want to lose Taiwan or Tibet? Because no country wants to lose land. Think of what the US will do if Alaska or even Hawaii wanted to become independent. Would the US let them go so easily? All country's top priorities is to keep land. There are some misunderstanding here. I am not trying to make China some kind of 'utopia'. We are still having lots of problems at home like the gap between the rich and the poor, the over population, the extremes of pollutions and ecological damage cause by industrial growth, and the poor human rights record. The reson I am posting question like that is because there are too many hate speech about China out there and many of them are lies. All I am trying to do is to give the people in the US views on the other side so they can be allow to make judgement themselfs.

Do you think singaporean children have it hard? I am a 14 year old singaporean kid and well as a class project, i have to write an essay on topics concerning the youths of Singapore. A friend of mine just returned from America (he is a singaporean too but he stayed there for a few years) and he told me that he skipped two grades there. The maths here is harder too. I too feel the pressure of studdying here. Here the subjects i am taking: English, Maths, Science, Malay( which is my mother tongue), History, Geography, Literature, Art, Home Ec, and Chinese(an additional language). I would like to know what kind of subjects people from other countries are learning. From a young age we are separated according to our academic abilities. Those in the lower group are constantly looked down upon. I know that this is a small country with limited resources, thus education is important for the younger generation as Singapore has only its people to depend on. But I still feel that they are too hard on us. Would appreciate your opinions on this.
What courses do you think would be in a Pagan School (similar to a Catholic school, perhaps) in the USA? I think there'd be... _Normal Classes_ - Math (Geometry, PreAlgebra, Algebra, Trigonometry, PreCalculus, Calculus) - English (British, American) - History (American [required], British, Irish, Italian, Egyptian, Norse, African, Japanese, Chinese, Middle Eastern, East European) - Science (Biology [required], Astronomy, Psychology, Forensics, Chemistry, Physics, Environmental, Earth) - Language (Spanish, Japanese, Chinese, Arabic) - Arts (Band, Oil Painting, Watercolor Painting, Choir, Music Theory) - Gym (Tae Kwan Do, Fencing, Kendo, Tai Chi, Karate, Aerobics, Gymnastics, Weight Training) _Pagan Classes_ - Divination (Omens + Symbology [required], Tarot, Runes + Ogham, Astrology, Palmistry, Tea Leaves + Crystal Ball Seeing) - Crafts (Rituals and Spells [required], Comparitive Pagan Religious Laws [required], Wand + Staff making, Rune + Ogham making, Making your own Magickal Alphabet) - Religions (Catholicism, Protestantism, Islam, Judaism, Kabbalah, Kemeticism, Ancient Graeco-Roman, Native American Traditions, Norse, Eastern European, Japanese, Chinese, Sumerian and Phoenician, Celtic, African, Vodou, Santeria) _Electives_ Herbalism Acupressure Feng Shui Mineral Identification Creative Writing Pagan Elements in Popular Literature (another Arts class) So, what do you think? Think it would be different? If you're Pagan and were in High School, would you be psyched to go? Y'know, what's your deal? I realized a little late I forgot to include Buddhism and Hinduism. I'm so sorry. ;_;
Beginning Kung Fu? I know that Kung-Fu is a traditional Chinese martial art and stuff, so please don't answer giving me a history lesson on Kung-Fu... I want to learn a fast martial art that's fun to learn and good for self-defense as well as sport (somewhat...I don't care about sport as much), but mainly for self defense. I'm very interested in taking a martial arts class and I was thinking of TKD because I LOVE kicking (played soccer for 11 years) until I discovered a Kung-Fu school in my area and took it into consideration. What do you cover in Kung-Fu? Do you work on kicking, punching, and grappling equally? What is the main focus of Kung-Fu fighting? I want to learn the art, mainly for a lot of the intimidating jumping/flipping/kicking moves. Kung-Fu practicioners - What do you think of Kung-Fu? Please don't bash on TKD I've read enough of it. Thanks! When I said "fast" martial art, I didn't mean a martial art that gets you a fast black belt, I meant a martial art that has lots of fast moves.
Can I get into an Ivy League College with these kinds of stats? I attend High School as a freshmen.. I went to a Pre-IB Middle School but in the Agriscience and Gifted Program in HS (All my classes are automatically Gifted Honors). I pretty much have a layout of the classes I'm going to take all 4 Years minus The Dual Enrollment and Some Summer Classes. Middle School: German 1 and German 2 (I took 3 years, 6 classes in all and very fluent). Algebra 1, Earth Space. Summer: PE 9th Grade: Agriscience 1 (Counts as a Science), AP World History, Biology, Art 1, Geometry, and English 1. Summer: Drivers Ed and Computer Programming - Basics (Online) 10th Grade: Biotechnology 2 (Elective), AP Computers (Or AP Geography), Chemistry, Mandarin Chinese 1, Algebra 2, Pre AP-English 2 11th Grade: Biotech. 3, AP American History, AP Biology, Chinese 2, Pre-Cal, AP English Lang. 12th Grade: Biotech. 4, AP Government, AP Chem (Or AP Enviorn.), Chinese 3 (Or AP Pysch), AP Cal AB, AP English Lit. I currently have a 3.4 GPA Unweighted and 4.1 Weighted from just my middle school and summer classes alone. I'm involved in a lot of volunteering- from a Pet Rescue to Girl Scouts. I'm currently working on my Gold Award in Girl Scouts and aiming to be a Silver Knight Nominee. I get near perfect Straight A's- all my classes are ending in unweighted GPA's around 3.6-4.0's. I'm beginning dual enrollment in the Fall of my Sophmore Year and with my combined AP Credits and Classes I hope to earn an Associates Degree from the Community College in Biology or some other science by the time I graduate from High School. I already took the PSAT and SAT in Middle School and 9th grade and was stacked having a better score then 75% of average test takers. My School is Magnet so we don't do the % over all, but in each academy. Compared to other people in my year I'm in the Top 5 Automatically.
Should I continue with math and science? My main courses in 9th grade were English H, Biology, and Geometry. I had gone to Chinese school and received 4 years of foreign language credits. I took Algebra II over the summer. My main courses in 10th grade were AP Environmental Science, World History H, English H, Trigonometry/Pre-Calculus, and Chemistry. I'm ahead in math and science, but I don't like nor do well in either subjects. I plan to apply to UC Berkeley and study business law. If I don't take any science or math classes my junior year, would it affect the chances of getting into Berkeley? I don't think it's worth risking getting a D just to see AP Bio/Chem or AP Calc on my transcript. Besides, law is nothing like science or math. I plan to take US History in the summer. So my junior year would look like this: English H, AP European History, and a Visual/Performing arts class. I'm thinking of taking AP Statistics in place of AP Calc. Well, I really don't know what to do. I need advice.

Kendo issue is too famous, and now Xmas, soccer issues. Why Korean lies that they have the roots of those? I'm an historian mostly work on Asian histories. So fortunately I've seen tons of literatures enough not to be a credulous sheep about those asian cultures, and I think it's quite funny seeing Koreans inroads foreign cultures such as Soccoer, Xmas, All Languages, British people, European cultures, Chinese cultures, Japanese cultures and its original martial arts are Originated in Korea they say so.... Too me and all historians this phenomenon is just hilarious but I simply wonder why they keep inroading foreign cultures with absolutely no evidences. Although I'm clean and familier to official documents and literatures of history as I have seen in my eyes, I wish if someone could tell me what's the matter with them. I have spoken to Chinese historian about this "taking overs" cuz I thought Chinese and Japanese might know Korean people more than I do, but I guess not... Excuse for my poor English but I really need help from someone who's familier to thier actions. hi scratchy_joe and thanks for the answer but... hapkido is a copy of Japanese aikido..... that introduced to Korea during annexation 1910 to 1945. Koreans are asserting it's originated in Korea around AD.372 but there was no Korea in this ancient times. We clearly know Fuyu tribal lived in that area BC37 to AD668 and they were ruined by ancient China. so... there is no roots of Korean culture but ancient Chinese culture was shared.
Why was my package handed over to customs (UK)? From time to time I buy things from China, from a guy I know. Last month he sent me some chinese "art tea"- nothing special, just normal tea which opens/uncurls in hot water. Last week I bought 3 special combs for lowering blood pressure (alternative medicine) for myself, my mother and my aunt. When tried to track my package with EMS, got this message: "package handed over to customs" . Checked tracing history for tea package- it was checked by customs also. I did not get any notice/letter with delivery last time. Does it mean they are "keeping an eye on me"??? Will I have to pay import charges on future packages? Is there a limit to the value of import per year? Could not find any info on their website. Would it help if I changed delivery address? Thank you, everybody.

Does anyone know a good place to migrate to? I live in Singapore, and plan to leave someday...I was thinking Japan, America, Canada, Britain or Europe. Details: I'm an aspiring animator, English-speaking Chinese who wouldn't mind learning a new language, prefers the four seasons to tropical weather, loves the liberal arts, likes nature and friendly folks, seeks a country with a deep and meaningful history, and can live with the threat of terrorism. Any ideas?

I am not in very good mood (angry and stressed!) because my previous examination is just over a few weeks ago and my next coming up examination is only 1 week time!
